The Arrowhead High School football team won the Division 1 State championship on Friday, November 21. The game was held at UW Madison’s Camp Randall stadium. Arrowhead faced off against Bay Port, pulling ahead with an 18-15 victory that secured their championship.
The win marks the school’s first championship title in more than a decade, with the last one being earned in 2013.
Ryan Heiman received a kickoff in the final minute of the game, then after a 76 yard return he scored the game winning touchdown. The special teams play would ultimately bring the team to success after an incredible back and forth game that allowed both teams to show off their skills.
Arrowheads defense had an amazing opportunity to shine. Brendan Foley landed a total of ten tackles as well as a pass break up and a much needed sack. Additionally, Jack Boerst intercepted the ball from Bay Port in a breath stopping moment.
The victory marks Arrowheads seventh state title. They have previously won in 1993, 1994, 1996, 2007, 2012, and 2013. However, this was the 14th time that Arrowhead has appeared in a title game.
The victory was a surprise after Bay Port had a playoff average of 42.5 points per game while Arrowhead only had a playoff average of 35 points per game. The close game was a testament to each team’s merit.
