Hartland Prepares for Lengthy Highway Closure
March 26, 2025

The Village of Hartland has begun preparing locals for the upcoming closure of a section of State Highway 83. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is shutting down a portion of the highway to begin construction. The section of the highway that will be shut down runs from Golf Road to Vettelson Road. The construction is set to begin in the early days of April, so this portion of highway will officially be closed off to the public on Monday, March 31. The project has an anticipated completion date of October 24. However, the project is dependent on weather conditions, and the date of completion may be pushed back.

According to Village officials, “Access to local businesses and residences will be maintained”. This means that citizens should not worry about losing any way into places along the route. However, detours will be a major concern. Locals should anticipate changing their paths of travel and preparing for potentially longer drives. The detour will have signage posted, directing the flow of traffic. Notably, it will utilize portions of WIS 67, WIS 16, and I-94.

The purpose of these closures is to help improve the safety of the roads and make them more efficient for multi-seasonal use. Major stretches of the road will be freshly paved and resurfaced. Improved traffic signals will also be incorporated at crossways at Golf Road, Oakwood Road, and Cardinal Lane. Additionally, Cardinal Lane will have its turn lane updated. Finally, repairs will be done alongside Highway 83 where damage has been found on the beams.

Residents and businesses have expressed annoyance over the project, as it removes a key artery to Lake Country during the busy summer months. Although no access will be entirely removed with the Highway’s closure, it may still increase drive times for those nearby. However, those overseeing the construction project have asked locals to please be patient with the process. The three miles that are being updated and cared for can become slippery and dangerous if not properly handled. Although the traffic flow may have to temporarily undergo a change, it will ultimately provide the community with improved roadways. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation recommends that those with concerns take the time to plan ahead for the upcoming construction.
