As Homegrown Provisions approaches the one year anniversary of its grand reopening, it’s constantly finding new and exciting ways to keep things fresh. Owner Mikaela is always putting together noteworthy happenings that allow her business to engage with the community. This past Thursday, April 3, Mikaela found the perfect way to warm up Okauchee’s hearts and ovens- A sourdough class.

Homegrown Provisions hosted its first ever ‘Sourdough Made Simple Class’, led by Margaret from Blue Bird Custom Creations. The class began at 6 p.m. and gave attendees the perfect chance to learn while also having a fun, social evening. For a fee, each guest was treated to all of the experienced leadership, materials, and homely comforts they could ask for. The class was held in Homegrown’s event space, which is unlike anything else around. Designed and put together by Mikaela herself, it is relaxing, spacious, and the perfect spot for a gorgeous photo op.

Margaret from Blue Bird Custom Creations walked each guest through the sourdough making process. Sourdough has gained something of a difficult reputation for itself. It requires time, patience, and a bit of guidance to properly understand and bake with. Having a well versed guide such as Margaret was extremely beneficial to guests. Throughout the evening, she answered questions and helped the group appreciate all of the complexities of sourdough. She also focused on how to incorporate proper sourdough upkeep into a busy schedule.

The class was delightfully informative. Its hands on approach helped build the confidence of guests, so that they could walk away feeling accomplished. In addition to learning about sourdough starter, the class also went through the key concepts of shaping and baking sourdough bread. Upon leaving, each person took home their very own sourdough starter and a loaf of bread that was ready to be baked. Even better, they took home a wealth of valuable knowledge that will serve them and their kitchens well.

The event is a testimony to Mikaela’s hard work. Her creative approach to building community was evident in the smiles and laughter found all throughout the evening. “The room was full with women eager to learn a new skill”, she said. “And [they] left with pride in their eyes. It was just freaking cool!”  The class sold out, meaning that she intends to hold another one in the future. Curious bakers and courageous locals alike should keep an eye out for all of the good times they can expect from Homegrown.
