Terrestrial Nursery Is Dousman’s Roadside Treasure

Waterville Road in Dousman contains a stunning section of the Kettle Moraine Scenic Drive that loops through Wisconsin. This historic roadway is known for its incredible views of lakes, it canopy of trees, and its access to beloved parks and forests. Heading south from Ottawa, there are horse farms and winding roads that look like they could have been ripped from a movie. Just past Pinewood Campgrounds and its abundance of greenery, is the perfect payoff for such a wonderful drive.

Terrestrial Nursery is a roadside farm stand that is open “All day, every day”. It is eye catching and beautiful, with potted annual plants sitting in front of it and a table filled with a lavish display of plants. Everything on the stand is for sale, and there is a consistent and diverse offering of sourdough breads and plants to choose from. The stand isn’t attended by anyone, but it works via the tried and true honor system. Those interested in purchasing a sourdough snack or their newest plant can pay via a small, black cash box or through PayPal.

Terrestrial Nursery has a variety of healthy, manageable sized plants to choose from. They offer several different types of tomatoes, including Cherry Buzz, Brandywine, and San Marzano (Which is a favorite for making authentic Italian red sauce). They also sell two types of cucumbers, California wonder peppers, pumpkins, squash, and watermelon. For those looking for spices, they also sell sweet basil, which is the perfect plant to keep around during summer to add a little pop of freshness to any dish.

The sourdough is also a highlight of the experience. Depending on availability, they have freshly baked sourdough bread loaves that are a real local treat. They have also started selling sourdough crackers, which we picked up a bag of. The ingredients are handwritten on the back of the bag, showing how healthy and simple these divine snacks are. They paired great with a hunk of cheddar cheese and a glass of red wine.

Terrestrial Nursery attends several farmers markets throughout the season, so be sure to keep an eye out for them at all of the upcoming markets. However, for those who can’t wait, the drive out to the roadside nursery is utterly unforgettable, and the plants and sourdough are a welcome find. This small business is a great reminder that a bit of hard work and passion can make a real, green difference in our community.
