Tips for Making the Most of Paddle Board Season
May 15, 2025

The end of May and beginning of June is usually when paddle boards get pulled out for summertime use. Although some brave souls are willing to wear wetsuits and paddle board as soon as the lakes thaw, many patiently wait until the weather gets warmer. The past few weeks have seen temperatures rise into the high 70s and low 80s, and paddle boarders have been spotted in Pewaukee and Beaver Lake. Here are some of the ways to make the most out of the great weather with your paddle board.

Variation

One of Lake Country’s best features is the different sizes and atmospheres of the surrounding lakes. Smaller lakes can be a great place for beginners or those who might be a little out of practice, because the water is typically more docile. However, larger lakes offer a bit more of a challenge, as they can have larger waves and wind resistance, creating a more intense workout. The key to success is variation. Alternating between easier and more difficult bodies of water will help build confidence and strength.

Technique

Paddle boarding targets your core. So much of the activity is centered around maintaining your balance on the water, meaning that engaging your core is crucial. It will give you greater strength, a leaner body, and a lasting endurance. Properly learning how to balance on the board also allows for your legs and feet to become more engaged. This may help with posture and flexibility in the long term.

Coordination

In order to not fall off your board at the first turbulent wave, you’ll have to focus on building your coordination. Move slowly and thoughtfully as you operate your paddle and either stand, sit, or kneel on the board. The waves will make you aware of your body, and how it flows and moves. As your skill increases, it might be helpful to try out some basic yoga positions. This is a fun way to test the limits of your coordination, while also reinforcing overall health.

Mental Health

Paddle boarding is a great way to spend time in nature. The serenity of an early morning on the lake or watching the sunset while on your paddle board can calm your nerves. It’s a perfect way to de-stress while getting some vital vitamin C. Making it a social event can also help improve mental health. Inviting friends allows for interaction and joyful, unforgettable memories shared with loved ones. It’s a great way to explore, relax, and enjoy the very best of Wisconsin’s incredible summertime.
