A City of Waukesha Alderman has publicly apologized after falsely reporting that he had seen ICE agents in downtown Waukesha.
Alderman Rico Camacho made a Facebook post where he alerted: “Everyone please please stay alert, stay inside ICE is in Waukesha in the corner of (People’s Park) they are undercover.”
Included with his initial post were several photos of the alleged ICE agents and a series of hashtags meant to draw attention to community members. That post has now been deleted from his social media.
It was later determined that the photos Camacho has posted were of several Secure Resources Unlimited employees. SRU is a local security company meant to serve in both public and private areas. The SRU officers were apparently preparing to go to lunch when they were photographed, as confirmed by the company’s CEO.
After Camacho’s allegation of undercover ICE agents operating in Waukesha was deemed false, the Alderman issued a public apology via his Facebook page:
“So, I want to be clear that I received information from concerned constituent because there was a belief that ICE was by people’s park. I was completely incorrect that these people WERE NOT ICE agents. I should have done my due diligence and checked to verify but I overreacted. I apologize to anyone and the men in rhe photo goong to lunch that may have felt a potential harm to the situation. I will ensure I take this as a learning opportunity and take full responsibility for this.
The misinformation has raised alarms over the pictured men being wrongfully targeted as ICE agents instead of private security officers, especially considering that their faces were not covered in the post.
The Waukesha Police Department has also warned citizens from believing unverified information that is spread online.
SRU uses a variety of different protocols and assessments in their service offerings. They do training courses, personal protection, investigations, background checks, and security audits among other important work.
SRU also hired a variety of skilled individuals who have a background in law enforcement at the national, state, and local levels.
