(The Center Square) – Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers said he does not plan to endorse a candidate in the next governor’s race.

Evers said that 20 candidates ran when he did the first time and, while he doesn’t expect as large of a race this time, he does expect more candidates to enter.

Congressman Tom Tiffany, R-7th Congressional, has an event planned for 6 p.m. on Wednesday in Wausau where he could announce his intentions to enter the race.

Rep. Francesca Hong, D-Madison, recently joined Lt. Gov. Sara Rodriguez, state Sen. Kelda Roys, D-Madison, and Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley as the major Democratic candidates in the race.

Washington County Executive Josh Schoemann and businessman Bill Berrien are the current Republican candidates.

Evers said he plans to remain in Madison after retirement, near his grandchildren, and plans to visit 50 state parks and remain somewhat involved in politics.

Before then, however, he said that he has plenty of goals on items that can be accomplished through the legislature.

Those include housing for homeless veterans, a non-partisan way to create future fair maps, corrections policy including the Green Bay correctional facility and renewing the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship.

“We’ve got all sorts of things to do,” Evers said.

In terms of advice for the next governor and politicians, Evers said that compromise is essential, but “compromise is not something you run for office with, because people think you are weak.”
