If you’re driving down Brown Street in Oconomowoc, it’s hard to miss the bright red, antique pickup truck permanently parked on the side of the road. Sitting behind its wheel is none other than a sparkly, plush alien. It’s a sight to behold and a good indicator of how Brown Street Emporium blends creativity with nostalgia.
Brown Street Emporium is shockingly large. It’s well maintained and spacious, but features dozens and dozens of vendor spaces, each of which are fully stocked with unique treasures. As you walk up and down the store aisles, you will quickly realize that it’s impossible to guess what you might find just ahead. One booth sold local honey, another sold shower steamers infused with essential oils, and another sold 3D printed figurines. Around each corner, exciting new goods can be found.
It’s the perfect spot for fans of vintage goods. Several booths are reminiscent of small, well-cultivated antique shops. The retro clothing like satin slip dresses or classic band t-shirts are a thrift lovers dream. The assortment of timeless antique furniture and home goods is both fascinating and gorgeous. The vendors clearly put care into selecting intriguing and one-of-a-kind pieces that can elevate any space without feeling dated.
Another way that Brown Street stands out is through highlighting local artists. Lake Country is filled with some of the most imaginative people, and this shop gives them the perfect place to display and sell their clever gifts. There are an abundance of painters and photographers who sell prints as well as original pieces of their work. Another vendor had a beautiful selection of personalized wreaths, which fit every season and style imaginable. A personal favorite came in the form of an artist who was selling “custom” license plates, in which he cuts apart and scrambles together old license plates in order to make new ones.
The love for Lake Country can clearly be found among each of the artists. Several vendors were very upfront about showing that love. For example, the t-shirts from ‘Inspired Scribe’ read ‘The Lake Is My Happy Place”. At a booth near the front of the store, Hartland Candles and Soaps sells a candle whose scent is inspired by Erin Hills. Everything feels like it is designed specifically with the community in mind.
It’s not hard to lose track of time inside of Brown Street Emporium. Its fantastic blend of old and new always feels distinctly special. It is unlike any other shop because of its huge selection that still manages to feel homey and happy. Next time you’re driving down Brown Street, keep your eyes peeled for the pickup and be sure to stop at the Emporium inside.
