Every first Friday in June, the United States celebrates National Donut Day. The history of this seemingly light-hearted holiday dates back to World War I. In 1917, the Salvation Army sent women near the front lines of battle in France. These women offered vital services to French officers, as they set up tents that provided much needed medical aid, food, and comfort. Best of all, these courageous nurses also took the time to make homemade donuts, a tasty treat meant to alleviate some of the soldiers’ stress while providing them with a taste of home. For this endeavor, these nurses earned the nickname of “Donut Lassies”.
French soldiers weren’t the only ones happy to receive the donuts. American soldiers grew to like them, too. When they returned home to the United States, they brought their newfound love for the pastry back with them. As donuts became increasingly popular, American soldiers earned the nickname “Doughboys”.
In 1938, the Salvation Army advocated for a National Donut Day as a way to honor the legacy of those who had fought in World War I. During the Great Depression, the event also served as a charity to help serve and raise money for those in need. The celebration was held on the first Friday in June, an annual tradition that is still being upheld.
The Lake Country area happily participates in the fun holiday. Several great, locally owned and operated bakeries take part in the tradition. Beach Bum Bakery, located on the lake in Pewaukee, has gained quite a following for their weekend donuts. To celebrate National Donut Day, they opened early at 7 a.m., with racks of their most popular flavors, such as fruity pebbles and s’mores available. Beach Bum is one of Lake Country’s hidden gems, but their donuts were nominated for the 2025 Milwaukee’s Top Choice Community Choice Awards. Their Delicious donuts often sell out, but they’re well worth waking up early for.
Another great option to satisfy the Donut Day sweet tooth is at Donut Squad in downtown Waukesha. They have a huge selection of different donuts, often trying out creative, inventive, and tasty flavors. They even offer cake donuts, a special treat for those who appreciate that timeless style of baking. Just like Beach Bum, Donut Squad often sells out their inventory, sometimes as early as 10 a.m. Our best tip is to get there early, and get there hungry.
