KEY POINTS

  • Eric Toney is an expert in criminal law and prosecution and is endorsed by the Milwaukee Police Association.
  • Toney is endorsed by over 100 police chiefs, sheriffs, and district attorneys.
  • MPA states, “Our current attorney general has let us down.”
  • Toney states, “As the son of a cop, I have witnessed firsthand the sacrifices MPA members make every day.”

The Milwaukee Police Association slammed Josh Kaul for putting “safety at the bottom” of his priority list, ultimately deciding to endorse Fond du Lac County DA Eric Toney. Failing to prioritize safety has secured their support for Toney, calling it a “life and death decision.”

The MPA Speaks Out

Milwaukee Police Association president Andrew Wagner stated, “MPA members work on the front lines daily to provide the highest degree of uninterrupted public safety service to the community. So is Fond du Lac District Attorney Eric Toney. That is why the MPA proudly announces its endorsement of Eric Toney for Wisconsin Attorney General, representing 1,500 professional Police Officers, Forensic Investigators, and Detectives of Milwaukee.”

The MPA says they need someone who isn’t afraid to be tough-on-crime, and the state needs to combat the surging of violent crimes in the community. They stand behind their decision, stating that Eric Toney will be a strong partner for law enforcement.

Republican Eric Toney is running for Wisconsin Attorney General in hopes of restoring the DOJ’s crime-fighting mission. Toney is also endorsed by over 100 police chiefs, sheriffs, and district attorneys.

MPA president Andrew Wagner stated that their decision is not based solely on promises. It’s a life and death situation for the police officers serving Milwaukee and the community. He commented, “When we hear ‘defund the police,’ we need an AG that will stand up to this rhetoric and battle for the resources needed to maintain law and order in the city. Our current Attorney General, Josh Kaul, has let us down. He has shown us that law enforcement and law and order are not his priority. The so-called ‘Top Cop’ has put safety at the bottom.”

Wagner continues, “The Milwaukee Police Association, and the entire state, needs our criminal justice leaders to direct resources toward the efforts that help us stem a crime epidemic. One that most of us haven’t seen in our lifetimes in the city of Milwaukee. Offices are out there doing this job day after day, but they can’t do it alone, and they cannot do it without a partnership (DOJ) that provides officer training, vital crime lab services, and sufficient resources for staff and funding the justice system.”

MPA Disappointed with Kauls Oversight of Community Safety

The MPA says the current AG has overseen cuts to all the areas that are key to community safety, including gutting the state’s prosecutors’ offices.

Milwaukee Police Association describes Toney’s experience, stating, “The son of a 30-year retired WI Deputy Sheriff, DA Toney has experience working at the intersection of the community and the law. Working as a District Attorney and private attorney who worked for justice for his clients. DA Toney has led the fight to change laws endangering our communities. He has successfully worked with local officials, state legislature, and the Governor to change state law to prevent violent sex offenders from being dumped all over Wisconsin.”

Eric Toney commented on the MPA’s decision to endorse him, “Our homicide rate is on pace for another record year after it already doubled in 2020. Police officers are doing their part with what they have. We need an AG who does his part as well. Milwaukee’s homicide epidemic is bleeding into the rest of the state.”

He adds, “Families live in fear of violent crime due to an attorney general playing politics with public safety. I will be a strong partner with the MPA and fight to ensure they have all the tools and resources needed to protect Milwaukee’s residents. As the son of a cop, I have witnessed firsthand the sacrifices MPA members make every day and understand the overwhelming majority of our officers would give up their lives to keep us safe. They’ve earned our support and deserve an AG that won’t turn their back on the law.”

Milwaukee Police Supervisor’s Organization Endorses Toney

Not only is Toney endorsed by 100+ police officers, sheriffs, district attorneys, and the entire MPA, but he has also received the support of the MPSO. The Milwaukee Police Supervisors Organization released an endorsement statement. They wrote, “The MSPO is endorsing Eric Toney for Attorney General of Wisconsin. Toney has proved he is law enforcement’s choice for being a fair and tough prosecutor while working as DA of Fond du Lac. History shows that prosecutors who are weak on crime lead to rampant crime breaking out in our communities.”

They add, “It’s time Wisconsin chooses a prosecutor who will uphold the law and stand against the political pressures. For these reasons, the decision is easy, and the MPSO is endorsing Eric Toney for Wisconsin Attorney General. Let’s make Eric Wisconsin’s Top Cop!”
