Brookfield police responded to a call on Wednesday afternoon after a man complained that the George Webb located on W Bluemound Rd. would not give him a free burger.
The ‘free burger’ promotion has been a staple in Wisconsin for decades. The deal offers customers a free burger after the Milwaukee Brewers have won 12 games in a row.
At the time of the incident, the Brewers had yet to win their twelfth game, as it was still in progress. Later in the day, the team would go on to win against the Pittsburgh Pirates 12-5.
An officer arrived to the scene of the incident shortly after the call was placed. According to the officer, the scene was cleared with no further problems or escalation.
The responding officer stated that: “[The complainant] called 911 because they wouldn’t give him his free burger… He was advised the game wasn’t over yet.”
George Webb Restaurants have stated that they will make an announcement at noon on Thursday, August 14 about when the free burger promotion giveaway will take place.
This marks the third time in history that the Brewers 12 game winning streak has resulted in free George Webb burgers. The first time was in 1987 and the second was in 2018.
Allegedly, George Webb has already “ordered 25,000 pounds of meat” and are preparing to “give away 100,000 burgers” sometime in the next week.
The promotion was teased just five weeks ago, when the Brewers held an 11 game winning streak. Unfortunately, they fell short, and the anticipation over the promotional free burgers was left behind.
However, the Brewers have been a hot streak. They’ve won 27 of their last 31 games, a record that is unmatched by others in league.
This is the team’s fourth consecutive three game sweep. Throughout the past 12 games, they’ve averaged 8.6 runs.
The free burger promotion began when the founder of George Webb joked that he would offer free burgers if the team, then the Milwaukee Braves, ever won 12 games in a row.
It would not be until 1987 when the newly named Milwaukee Brewers would achieve the highly anticipated 12 game winning streak. Nearly 170,000 burgers were given away that year.
When the Brewers hit their 12 game streak in 2018, over 100,000 free burgers vouchers were distributed.
