As spring rolls into southeastern Wisconsin, many residents are anxious to get into their gardens and begin planting. The past few weeks have seen the rise of tulips, daffodils, and periwinkles. Although many experts advise waiting until the first week or two of May to begin planting annuals, planters filled with marigolds, zinnias, and pansies have begun popping up. Over the last few weeks, roadside flower stands and markets have begun to open.
At the tail end of March, Garden Gate Nursery and Landscaping, located about two minutes from downtown Hartland, opened for its 2025 season. The company is deeply tied to the area, being both family and Veteran owned and operated. Since 1991, the nursery has been a part of the community. It has an expansive outdoor area, home to its namesake nursery, where rows and rows of outdoor plants can be found. They have a unique and diverse selection that changes throughout the spring, summer, and fall seasons.
Garden Gate has much more to offer than just outdoor plants. They also sell a variety of unique, interesting garden art, ceramic planters, and fountains that can fit perfectly on any Lake Country property. Inside of their gift shop, they sell even more fun garden art, tools for helping with all your gardening needs, and locally handmade goods, such as soaps and candles.
Garden Gate is an entryway to spring. Since their seasonal reopening, anxious gardeners have been flocking to pick out plants and see what colorful blooms are available so far. The staff, known for being incredibly friendly and deeply knowledgable, have years of expertise. As the weather warms up, they can be seen thoughtfully watering and maintaining their plants, and are always ready to offer some helpful advice.
Some of their best tips are about taking care of new plants. They suggest being extremely watchful during the first six weeks, when new plants are most vulnerable. Paying careful attention to the amount of water they are given is crucial. It is important not to over water or under water new plants. Then, about three weeks after purchasing, it is suggested that the new plants are fertilized to ensure that they receive necessary nutrients. They also suggest monitoring for insects or signs of potential disease, so that any problems can be stopped before they become uncontrollable.
New and experienced gardeners alike can rejoice at the spring reopening of Garden Gate. Lake Country plant lovers will always have a friend at the beloved local nursery.
