How to Be Lake Country’s Best Rummager
June 7, 2025

Early summer is often the time when rummage sales can be found nearly every weekend across Lake Country. From churches to neighborhoods, there are dozens of rummage sales to seek out. Many have hidden treasures or great finds for a fraction of their off-the-shelf price. Some businesses, such as Roost Mercantile, even hold outdoor flea markets, such as their upcoming one the weekend of June 27th (Which, rumor has it, will even feature an appearance from an Elvis impersonator). The sales can be overwhelming so here are a handful of tips to get the most out of rummage season.

Use the Internet

For many years, rummage sales were all about sidewalk signs and wandering through neighborhoods looking for sellers. Nowadays, Facebook groups and other community apps can be useful ways to connect. There are even specific rummage sale Facebook groups for many areas in Lake Country, such as Oconomowoc and Hartland.

Get There At the Right Time

In the rummage sale game, timing is everything. To get the most unique, highly sought after items, try to arrive to the sale as early as possible. Getting there within 30 minutes of the sale’s beginning typically means that some of the best items will still be available. However, if you’re looking to sneak in some last minute deals, get to the sale run the final hours before close. As the sale ends, there’s usually a greater chance that people will be willing to negotiate prices and thrifty shoppers might get a great bargain.

Come Prepared

Rummage sales can be addictive, and many shoppers usually don’t stop after just one. In anticipation of the full shopping trip, be sure to dress comfortably. Wear adequate footwear and clothing that allows you to move larger objects if necessary. Athleisure may be a good option for rummage sale attire. Also, be sure to bring a few tote bags of various sizes so that you can carry objects. Finally, cleaning out your car beforehand can be helpful so that you have enough space to bring all your purchases back home.

Look for Quality

Rummage sales are a great opportunity to find some high quality treasures. Looking for objects that are solidly built, clean, and without any major imperfections is an essential part of making the most of your money. Many suburban rummage sales have home goods, sports equipment, and children’s products that can be bought for a fraction of their usual price, but it’s important that they be carefully inspected. If products are electronic, make sure that they work before buying them. For furniture, check for stability. For clothing, check for tears or worn out areas.
