Charlie Kirk, an activist and outspoken college campus debater, was killed last week while engaging with students at Utah Valley University.

In the wake of his passing, memorial services and candle light vigils have occurred throughout the country to honor his legacy.

On Saturday September 13, just three days after Kirk’s death, a vigil was organized in Oconomowoc. It was held at Village Green Park, off of Wisconsin Ave. by Lake Fowler.

The event began at 6:30 pm as a way to honor him. Organizers encouraged attendees to bring their own candles to help respectfully pay tribute.

The turnout for the event is estimated to be around 2,000 people. Many brought flowers, balloons, candles, and signs.

The park’s American flag was lowered to half mast after a Presidential mandate ordered that the flag be lowered nationwide through September 14 “As a mark of respect for the memory of Charlie Kirk”.

The evening opened with a prayer ceremony, then the group was led in song by a local vocalist. Afterwards, multiple people spoke, paying tribute to Kirk.

“We should be bold, be courageous, and always share the truth,” said one speaker. “My condolences go out to Charlie’s family, especially his wife, Erika, and his two children, who lost their father far too soon.”

The evening closed with a candlelight ceremony, during which hundreds of community members came together in solidarity.

Oconomowoc’s State Representative,Barbara Dittrich, was not in attendance but called for an end to hatred, stating “Political violence and terrorism are never acceptable.”

A Wisconsin singer, Anthony Nix, was also present. He shared his new song, “Make America Great Again”, which was released “In memory of Charlie Kirk”.

Another vigil is scheduled for this coming Tuesday, September 16 at Cutler Park (321 Wisconsin Ave.) in Waukesha.

The Waukesha vigil has been organized by the Wisconsin Young Republicans (WIYR).

WIYR Chairman, Kyle Schroeder, released a statement on Kirk’s passing, stating:

“The tragic and sudden passing of Charlie Kirk is devastating. Our prayers are with his family, those in attendance at the event, and everyone affected by this horrific act of political violence. Justice must be served”
