The Millpond Dam is currently at a Level 2 Emergency, meaning that it is at a high risk for failure.
The dam’s failure would pose a threat to nearby areas such as Merton, Hartland, and portions of Delafield.
Many local engineers have been called upon to help prevent the dam from collapsing. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources have also been working hard on finding a solution.
Should the dam collapse, many local homes and businesses would face “catastrophic flooding impacts”.
The Millpond is connected to the nearby Bark River. Should the dam be breached, water levels could rise to the 100 to 500 year floodplain.
According to theVillage of Merton President Ron Reinowski, there has been significant erosion to the dam in the wake of recent storms and major flooding.
“Based on engineering reports, there are no downstream concerns of any breach wave beyond county highway VV… Depending on the level of Bark River waters rising, this could lead to downstream road closures or minor flooding of surrounding properties. Residents along the river should continue to monitor water levels and official sources of information.”
Much of the gravel in the dam’s spill way has been eroded due to rain. As a result, there is no admittance in the area or fishing allowed until the proper repairs have been made.
For those affected by the recent flooding in Merton, there will be two upcoming special pickup dates for water damaged items. Those dates are Friday, August 15 and Friday, August 22nd.
The Merton Millpond is a 34 acre lake, which typically has a maximum depth of about 8 feet. It is a popular fishing spot in the area due to its easily accessible public boat landing. There are also a variety of fish such as panfish, largemouth bass, and northern pike.
The Bark River is a popular destination for many kayakers due to its easy parking and accessible access to local parks.
The situation is developing and residents are advised to stay cautious and informed of any potential updates.
