More University of Wisconsin students get visas revoked

(The Center Square) – There are now more than two dozen current and former University of Wisconsin students on the list of students who’ve seen their visas revoked by President Donald Trump’s Administration.

The UW said 14 more students at the university’s 12 other campuses have also seen their student or visitors visas revoked.

On Monday, the university said 13 students and recent graduates at UW-Madison saw their visas revoked as well.

“UW–Madison played no role in these terminations,” the university said in a statement. “UW-Madison is not aware of federal law enforcement activity on campus, and the university does not believe the terminations at UW–Madison are specific to participation in free speech events or political activity. However, the precise rationale for these terminations is unclear.”

A UW spokesman said the university does not have a specific list of students at the other campuses.

But the UW said a visa termination “generally means that an affected individual should depart the United States immediately.”

The same spokesman said the new count of 27 UW students and alumni is a “point in time” number.

The Trump Administration has stepped up immigration enforcement across the country and focused on student visas specifically.

The most famous case is Mahmoud Khalil, the Columbia University graduate student who was arrested last month.

There’s no word if any of the UW students who’ve seen their visas terminated have been arrested.

The 27 students are among thousands of international students at the Universities of Wisconsin.

UW-Madison alone has nearly 8,000 international students on campus.

“International students, faculty, and staff are important members of the UW–Madison community, and the university deeply values their presence,” the university added in its statement.
