A harmful algae bloom at Lake Geneva caused quite a stir on a busy Friday night, leading to the closure of public beaches near downtown.

The Walworth County Division of Public Health, in collaboration with the Geneva Lake Environmental Agency (GLEA) and the city of Lake Geneva, decided to shut down the beaches as a precautionary measure, according to WTMJ4. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources also closed the beach at Big Foot Beach State Park.

The closure was due to the presence of cyanobacteria, commonly known as blue-green algae. These microscopic organisms, which can resemble scum on the water’s surface or look like pea soup, are naturally occurring but can sometimes produce harmful toxins.

These toxins pose a risk to humans, pets, and wildlife by damaging neurological systems. GLEA and Walworth County Public Health are currently working to determine the strain of cyanobacteria and its toxicity level.

The sudden beach closures left many visitors disappointed, including the Zaidi family, who traveled from Dallas and had planned a picnic at the beach.

“The beach was supposed to be a highlight of our trip,” said Fahad Zaidi. Meanwhile, Bev Gerst and Laura Troy, who came from Indianapolis to enjoy Lake Geneva, were also disheartened. “It’s a little disappointing because I’d like to have toes in the sand,” Bev noted.

Despite the setback, the Zaidi family maintained a positive outlook, with Fahad’s brother, Hassan, adding, “Even if we’re not in the water, we’re still enjoying the breeze and the view. That’s what it’s all about.” There’s currently no timetable for when the beaches will reopen .
