(The Center Square) – The state of Wisconsin plans to sell three more state buildings in Madison as it is prepared to open a Milwaukee State Office Building.

The changes in state-owned office space are part of the state’s Vision 2030 plan to save money and efficiently use state.government property.

The state is planning to reduce state office space by 400,000 square feet while selling the General Executive Facility 2 and 3 buildings on Webster Street in Madison along with the State Human Services Building at 1 W. Wilson St.

The state bought 2.6 acres at 27th Street and Wisconsin Avenue in Milwaukee for a new state office.

“Vision 2030 not only helps us modernize where and how work gets done at the state level, it also has provided more opportunities to develop and grow our Wisconsin workforce talent across the state – a win-win for taxpayers and state workers,” said Department of Administration Secretary Kathy Blumenfeld.

The state has already reduced office space by 230,000 square feet since instituting the Vision 2030 plan and the most recent update claims that has led to $7.4 million in occupancy savings annually along with $541 million in deferred maintenance costs.

More than 12 state agencies have consolidated and reduced office space since the last update to the plan in March 2023.

Requests for Proposals for the new Milwaukee office building have been released with responses due by Feb. 28.

“We look forward to working closely with our partners and local developers to build a multi-purpose state office building and remainder of the site that will foster growth and revitalize the community,” Blumenfeld said.
