The fatal shooting occurred just before midnight on August 30, 2024, at an apartment in Whitewater, where authorities found Welsh with multiple gunshot wounds. According to WTMJ, investigators believe that Welsh and Richards were involved in an altercation before Richards allegedly shot her several times. Due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, few details have been made public.

Kara Welsh, originally from Plainfield, Illinois, was a senior gymnast at UW-Whitewater. She was described as a vibrant and caring individual, known for her sense of humor and ability to bring joy to those around her. A fundraising campaign has been started to support Welsh’s family, raising over $35,000 as of September 3rd. The campaign aims to assist the Welsh family with the financial burdens they will face during this difficult time, including travel and planning.

This heartbreaking tragedy has left the UW-Whitewater community and Welsh’s loved ones in deep mourning.
