New Food Truck Court in Oconomowoc Sparks Excitement and Debate

The city of Oconomowoc is gearing up for a new addition to its downtown area: a food truck court that has the potential to bring both excitement and debate to the community. Recently, the Common Council gave preliminary approval to the project, which aims to transform properties along East Wisconsin Avenue into a bustling hub for food lovers. This proposal, spearheaded by Mike and Ken Herro, includes the renovation of existing buildings, increased parking, and a park-like space for up to eight food trucks.

According to the Oconomowoc Enterprise, while the idea of a food truck court has garnered support, it’s not without its critics. Some local business owners are concerned about the potential competition these mobile eateries might bring to the downtown area, which is already home to several established restaurants. John Suttner, owner of Cornerstone Sports Pub & Eatery, expressed his opposition, fearing that the food truck court might clash with the city’s traditional, small-town charm.

Similarly, Dick Reinert, owner of Splash Martini Bar, voiced concerns that the new development might not align with his vision of quality retail and commercial spaces for the city.

On the other hand, proponents of the project, including some city officials, believe that the food truck court could inject new energy into downtown Oconomowoc. Alderman Chris Douglas pointed out that the community has shown excitement for food trucks, and he sees the project as a way to draw more visitors to the area. The project is still in its early stages, with several details, such as alcohol regulations and traffic flow, needing to be addressed.

As the plans move forward, the food truck court represents both an opportunity and a challenge for Oconomowoc. It could be a vibrant addition to the downtown scene, but it will require careful consideration to ensure it benefits the entire community.
