Queen Elizabeth II has served seven long decades on the throne of the U.K. Her reign as the queen has come to an end, as she “died peacefully” on Thursday afternoon at Balmoral Castle at age 96. Royal family officials announced her passing via a tweet:

Officials stated that Queen Elizabeth was placed under medical supervision earlier in the day on Thursday. “Following further evaluation this morning, The Queen’s doctors are concerned for Her Majesty’s health and have recommended she remain under medical supervision,” the palace released a statement

The Queen’s son Charles, who is 73, is now king and will be known as King Charles III. Officials have mentioned he is still at Balmoral and will head back to London on September 9th, 2022.

King Charles released a statement about his mother’s passing, “The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family. We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and much-loved mother. I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.” Charle’s second wife, Camilla, will be known as queen consort.

At 96, Queen Elizabeth had served longer than any other British ruler and is the second longest-reigning monarch. The U.K. celebrated her Platinum Jubilee in June. According to Buckingham Palace, the monarchy is the head of the U.K., while the role of creating or passing legislation remains with Parliament. Elizabeth served as a national identity and gave the people a sense of continuity and stability for 70 long years.
