(The Center Square) – Candidate Roger Roth identifies himself as a “Trump conservative,” while a recent ad from one of his competitors in Wisconsin’s 8th congressional district, Tony Wied, features Trump slamming Roth as “no friend to MAGA.”
Roth’s first television campaign ad, “Build and Protect,” identified the candidate as a “Trump conservative” who “will stand with Trump to rebuild America.”
Roth’s most recent ad, “Fight,” promises “In congress, he will fight alongside President Trump to finish the wall, deport criminals, and protect jobs,” ending with a picture of the candidate shaking hands with the former president.
But the former president and the candidate he endorsed have responded antagonistically to Roth’s support.
Wied, a businessman who sold his gas stations in 2022 to enter politics, released his newest ad, “Hello Wisconsin: A Message From President Trump” on Monday with a speech from the former president reiterating his “complete and total endorsement” of Wied. The 30 second ad also features Trump accusing Roth, a veteran and former Wisconsin senator, of being a fake Republican.
“Tony is a highly successful businessman and an America First warrior, who is running against RINO Roger Roth, who is no friend to MAGA,” Trump says in the video. “Roger should drop out of the race immediately because Tony is the guy as your next Congressman.”
Wied and Roth, two of the three Republican candidates on Wisconsin’s primary ballot, hold mostly the same views on issues like the economy, immigration, and energy. Both support tax cuts and a reduction in federal spending, finishing construction of the southern border wall, and increasing domestic oil production in Wisconsin with Line 5.
The state primaries are Tuesday.
